Hi, my name is Mike Butler and I would like to welcome you to ReferLife Co-Operative.

ReferLife Co-Op is a dream inspired by the loss of my brother at a young age to cancer. My brother's situation brought home to me the fragility of life, how it can change in an instant, how one day you can be living your life and the next be fighting for it.

Everything changed in this instant and I realized the real value of life. If you have ever lost a loved one, you know how you start to appreciate your life and relationships so much more. You also begin to see the needs of others who are not as fortunate as you much more clearly and you feel true compassion towards their plights.

I went through so many thoughts and emotions when he was sick and after he passed. I remember clearly asking why him. You have to understand that my brother was a very good man. Many might say a better man than me. So as I have always felt like the odd man out, the question was very real to me. WHY HIM?… WHY NOT ME?

Then I realized the old saying. God takes the good ones early to teach us the meaning of life.

I started to see things differently. I remember being a passenger with his twin one day, we were stopped at a light and I remember it like yesterday, this young girl in a wheelchair outside a doctor's office with a leg missing, and it hit me. What does her future and life hold for her?... and you wonder… could you help? I started to look at the commercials on television asking for money to feed kids a little differently, but wondering if there was a better way. I live in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and I see the increase in homelessness and knowing that government can't help, you wonder if there isn't a better way to address the issues that plague communities and people's lives.

The effect allowed me to see the issues that many people may be going through easier and with more empathy. I wanted to do something to make a difference in people's lives, all they had to do is want it or just want more. Some people just want to eat, drink, pay their bills and survive. Some want more from life, they want to get and be healthier, they want to start and run a business successfully, some just want to earn more money, some just need bare neccessities of life. I wanted to be able to provide a way to change all their lives and fullfil their dreams and goals. I wanted to take someone who had nothing and give them hope and opportunity to make their lives better. I want to change the world.

You see I knew myself and that I was not the guy to volunteer to serve food down at the mission, however, if with a little ingenuity and investment into a system I could create a way to put food into the kitchen, then that is where I would fit in.

I knew that there are just too many people in this world who have no choice but to work their butts off and this is just to survive. For many in the world they are not even able to do that and with the current circumstances around the world, those bad times just got many times worse.

I realised then that I did not want to leave this world without having added something positive to it.

My dream was to create a way for people to help themselves to a more fulfilling life and at the same time allowing them to help others to do the same. What could be better than raising money for member needs, organization needs, community needs, charities and also earning a life changing income at the same time
